Charlene - new recruit
Charlene, a committed recruit, at The Way International annual festival 1972. The Way is considered by many to be a fundamentalist cult.

Are you concerned about cults? How do they recruit? Can anyone get caught in a cult? Tune in this Monday night at 10 pm to the new A&E series on the topic. For a sneak peek, click this link: “Cults and Extreme Belief.”

A&E Interviews Janja Lalich, PhD, cult expert

The A&E show features an interview with cult expert Janja Lalich, PhD. Janja graciously read my memoir, Undertow, before I published it. Her blurb appears in Undertow and on this website. Here’s what she wrote:

“A magnificently written life story that sheds light on the enticing ways of cult recruitment and indoctrination that engender conformity, obedience, and loss of self. Nevertheless, thankfully, the seed of doubt grows, as the author strives for acceptance through hard work and deep faith. Edge’s prose captures the essence of cult life and the personal devastation of having to acknowledge not only corruption and plagiarized teachings but also a ‘sex ring’ at the top levels of leadership. An important and must-read book—more gripping than a mystery. Undertow will sweep you away.” —Janja Lalich, PhD, Professor Emerita of Sociology at California State University, Chico, author of Bounded Choice: True Believers and Charismatic Cults

Tell your friends to watch the A&E show. We can’t afford to remain ignorant about cults any longer.

And now for something completely different … from cults to cultures

The next couple of blogs from me will cover our recent trip to Morocco, land of Mollywood, Marrakesh, and the Mighty Sahara. I’m one of the lucky ones to have escaped the cult and was able, with the help of education, time, and love, to create a new life. My intention with all this traveling I do with my second husband, Dr, Hoyt Edge, Rollins College Professor Emeritus of Philosophy, is to share what I learn about and from different cultures around the world.

What’s one thing we learned on this trip? To love a favorite Moroccan dessert: sliced oranges (crosswise, so the slices look like flowers) and sprinkled on top with cinnamon. Love ’em!
