Five Writerly Aspirations

By: Julie Jordan Scott

No matter what your career or life’s work, what are the values you aspire to live by? Do you have ways of reminding yourself of them? This post is something from my bulletin board that’s been there for about fifteen years. It reminds me of the kind of writer I want to be.

Values for my writerly life

When I was a Girl Scout, among other things, we pledged to behave well and set a good example.

In a similar vein, since I lead a writerly life, you might say the following is my writer’s pledge, a list of aspirations, or values to live up to. There are more I could add, like the saying in the photo: “Write in an old style notebook to keep present and grounded,” but this list really speaks to the heart of the matter. Actually, it’s not a bad list for everyone, no matter their life’s work.

Note: I did not make up this list; I found it stated long ago by someone else somewhere along my journey in writing. Enjoy!

  1. Read Well
  2. Write clearly and coherently
  3. Study effectively
  4. Reason soundly
  5. Question thoughtfully

Thanks for reading!

Your writer on the wing,

Charlene

It’s the adverbs that are hard.

Hi Charlene! I love your writing advice!

I’ve started a “Wisdom Door,” which is on the side of my bedroom door that faces out to the hall and kitchen, where I can see it most often. I will add your “Five Writerly Aspirations,” and the lovely quote from your bulletin board.

My wisdom door idea came from Rev. Katrina Jenkins.

    Linda 😉
