Happy 2024. Happy Reading.

This is how Charlene feels about reading. Can’t get enough!

Greetings, readers. Happy 2024!  I send you all good wishes for health and happiness this year and many thanks for subscribing to this blog.

Today, I encourage us to do one thing this year: read more books, as many as you can. I say let’s devour books freely like scruptious chocolates this year and every year, come what may. Read whatever you feel like reading, wherever you are, no matter what time it is. Let the act of reading fill you with joy.

Books for me

Currently, and lucky for me, a stack of books awaits my attention. Recently, for Christmas, one of my friends gave me a banned-in-Florida book: Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.

Another story in the stack is Carolyn Forche’s, What You Have Heard Is True: A Memoir of Witness and Resistance.

Then there’s the tome, The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, which is something I’ve meant to tackle for years but haven’t yet. So I intend to get happily lost in it.

Meanwhile, I just finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, a most remarkable story of unimaginable grit and love.

Right now, I’m in the early pages of Absolution by Alice McDermott. The story is set in Vietnam, a place I’ve visited, so it’s wonderful to revisit that country via reading.

What I’ll reread this year is Stephen Prothero’s New York Times Bestseller: Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know—But Doesn’t. When I meet with college students to discuss Undertow, I often refer to Prothero’s work. He is excellent.

So, below are some quotable quotes I discovered on Goodreads, where you can find all sorts of book descriptions and author bios. Select a book somewhere and dig in. Don’t wait for a rainy day, either!

And one last thing: Don’t fear the library. Many worlds await you within.

Quotes about books

“We read to know we’re not alone.”
―William Nicholson, Shadowlands: A Play

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

―Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.”
―Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”
―Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”
―Groucho Marx

“Books are a uniquely portable magic.”
―Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft

“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read.”
―Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Thanks for reading!

Read more books! That’s a New Year’s resolution I’ll be happy to keep.

Yeah, that’s the only worthy and exciting resolution I have this year. Other stuff, like complain less, exercise more, are things I am less thrilled about. “-)

Love this since I love to read. Roger use to say that if I didn’t have a book to read that I would
read the cereal boxes! I was not familiar with the Groucho Marx quote but love it and agree. Thanks for your wonderful thoughts and writings. Happy New Year. Hope it is a year of health, happiness, and loads of terrific books!
