Kudos to My Writer Friend, Robyn Allers

keep writing
By: Denise Krebs

Greetings! I’m a lucky writer with many wonderful writer friends. Today, I want to tell you about one of them: Robyn Allers, whose story “Here We Are” won first prize in the most recent contest at Flash Fiction Magazine.

Keep reading for a link to her story.

How I Know Robyn

I first met Robyn about twenty years ago. Back then, we each had fulltime jobs—mine as a writer in the software industry; hers as a writer (among other posts) at Rollins College. Both of our husbands worked there. Both of our husbands loved to travel, too, so we had lots of travel stories to share. Over quiet dinners, Robyn and I discovered we had something else in common: creative writing. We did it “on the side.” Through the years we’ve read each other’s work and offered each other feedback. She did me the gargantuan favor of doing that with drafts of Undertow, for which I’m ever grateful.

What I love about Robyn

One thing I love about Robyn is the humility she has about her writing. That is a real treat. I also admire her determination to keep her writing life going no matter what. She tends to that part of herself that wants/needs to create. I find that inspiring.

Robyn’s background in the arts is extensive: writing, acting in, and directing stage plays; teaching English; writing short stories, and at one time serving as Interim Director of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins. She also has experience in journalism. I think she’s a born storyteller.

Now, I’m thrilled to share the link to her latest prize-winning work, “Here We Are.”

    Charlene!

Robyn’s story is so lyrical! It could be a poem! I love her character’s line, “No wonder religion dominates history.” And such an intriguing and delightful read!

Thank you for sharing with all of us

Speaking as one who also ‘sees calamity everywhere’, I loved this! Especially the idea of being a ‘heartbeat away from believing in grace’. I know the feeling. And yet the wiser version of yourself simply realizes: we were lucky. Know that feeling too. This was lovely. Thanks for sharing, Charlene.
