Wander & Wonder

Galapagos Islands. 2006. Photo by Charlene Edge

Are you able to get outside these days to walk awhile or play with your kids? When was the last time you refreshed yourself around trees, plants, and bodies of water?

Almost daily, my husband and I walk outside to clear our minds and get a little exercise, which has become sanity-saving, too, as we quarantine during this beyond-depressing COVID-19 pandemic.

Sometimes nature can lift our hearts even in the darkest days. It can offer breathtaking scenes of peace and even pure joy. The ones captured in the photo gallery below are ones I think fit that bill. I took these photos during our travels around the country and other countries, too. (We’ve been to many countries around the world during the past twenty years together.) But first … I want to share a book with you. It inspired this post.

Rachel Carson – environmentalist sharing wonder

Along with an inspiring out-in-nature story, scenes of unusual beauty are captured in the book that our book club is reading this month. It was published more than three decades ago by the environmentalist, Rachel Carson: The Sense of Wonder: Words and Pictures to help you keep alive your child’s inborn sense of wonder, and renew your own delight in the mysteries of earth, sea and sky.

From the cover:

“Stunning new photographs by Nick Kelsh beautifully compliment Carson’s intimate account of adventures with her young nephew, Roger, as they enjoy walks along the rocky coast of Maine and through dense forests and open fields, observing wildlife, strange plants, moonlight and storm clouds, and listening for the ‘living music’ of insects in the underbrush.”

Ms. Carson and her nephew share jaunts into the wilderness, examining tiny creatures like shells and ferns, as well as admiring distant planets and stars. I relate to some of the starry moments she describes because when I was a kid, my father would set up his telescope on the front lawn for us to watch an eclipse or just take a look at our mysterious Milky Way Galaxy—a carpet of white spangles on the black ceiling of sky.

Captured wonder

Most photos below are sans buildings and people to focus on NATURE. Not everything is precisely identified. At least the countries are (BTW, Patagonia is not a country, but an area that stretches across Argentina and Chile.)

Maybe another time I’ll include pics from of our other trips, i.e. to Cambodia, China, and Tibet, although I’ve written lots of travel blogs with photos posted here on this website. You can find them under the Blog Categories drop-down list, Travel. Enjoy.

Thanks for reading!

Your writer on the wing,
