First Website Anniversary & New Wings Press!

Charlene - author and publisher at New Wings Press
Charlene – author and publisher at New Wings Press

Hello, my friends, acquaintances, and interested parties. Today is a triple-header.

  1. 1. This website’s first anniversary
  2. 2. My birthday (shhh)
  3. 3. The jump-off-another-cliff creation: New Wings Press!

Anniversary celebration kudos go to my website designer, Mary Ann de Stefano, owner of Mad About Words. Her creativity helped make this site a reality and a continuing home for my work.

Additional kudos go to Hoyt, my husband, whose support in every way has made this website and my writing life possible.

New Wings Press

Yes, I’ve jumped off another cliff. It’s my pleasure to announce New Wings Press, my self-publishing enterprise which will bring out my book this year:

Undertow: My Escape from the Fundamentalism and Cult Control of The Way International

Keep your eyes peeled for progress reports here.

This site is a no-trivia zone. I do hope it inspires, entertains, and informs one way or another.

Anniversary day quote

Our anniversary present is this quote from Barry Lopez, one of my writing heroes. Here’s what one of his characters in Resistance says:

“We reject the assertion, promoted today by success-mongering bull terriers in business, in government, in religion, that humans are goal-seeking animals. We believe they are creatures in search of proportion in life, a pattern of grace.”

Just read a few of your posts and enjoyed them. You’re so right–no one joins a cult. Something that also caught my eye was a statement about ISIS not being a purely political group. Entirely agree. It is a religion, whether or not Americans are comfortable with that word. Now that we have a few generations that have not even been splashed on by a generalized Christianity, our lack of religious/philosophical language and understanding has become a major challenge for professional diplomats.

Recently heard a CSPAN State Department seminar about that very fact–that we have very few young diplomats who know what a world view is, much less how to identify your own and how to listen to someone else’s. It seems to me we are reluctant to “draw a line” with ISIS beyond which we will not and they must not go in part because we no longer teach children how to recognize statements of religious value. Do we lack a common, broad agreement as to a general definitions of “good” and “evil”?

It seems to me that taking the general idea of God (the One Who will hold each of us accountable) has produced a recent couple of generations who are completely unable to recognize evil. That, it seems to me, might not be a good thing.

Thanks for the insights on this. Recently I spoke with students in a religion class who had little idea how serious people can get about their Bible-based world view.
More on this to come in future posts and my upcoming memoir.
      Cheers,
      Charlene
